Shop / hansa teutonica board game
Quester's Keep is a board game that can be played by 1 to 6 players. At the beginning of the game, each player selects a character and is given 3 secret quest cards. The game board is made up of hex-shaped tiles, and the game starts at the Keep tile which is surrounded by 6 randomly chosen land tiles. Each land tile has the name of a location on it, and players are looking for the ones that match their quest cards.
During their turn, players can move from one tile to an adjacent tile and draw a random land tile if none exists in the direction they wish to move. They then draw a wild encounter card and resolve it. Defeated wild encounters can be traded at the Keep for treasure or character improvements from the Keep's marketplace.
If a player moves onto a land tile with a location that matches one of their secret quest cards, they can reveal the card to draw from the quest encounter deck instead of the wild encounter deck. If they defeat the encounter, they have completed the quest, collected the treasure, and placed the quest card face up in their player area. However, if they fail or flee the quest, a red marker is placed on that location, and the quest is now considered an open quest for any player to attempt.
Only treasure that is safely deposited at the Keep counts towards victory, so players must get it back to the Keep safely. Once someone has completed three quests, a 6-round endgame counter is started. At the end of the 6th round, each player's banked treasure at the Keep is counted, and the player with the most treasure wins.
Exploration is a key aspect of the game, as players will need to venture beyond the only home they have known, placing new land tiles along the way. The world will take on a different appearance by the time the game is over.
Character development is also an important part of the game. Players can trade hides and bounty for treasure at the Keep, which can be used to improve their characters and prepare them for the challenges ahead.
The game features engaging combat, where players must roll a series of dice to determine their success in defeating their enemies. The outcome of these battles can have a significant impact on the player's progress.
Survival is another crucial element of the game. Even if a player defeats their quest, they still have to make it back to the Keep with their treasure. They must navigate the wild encounters in their weakened condition or find a friendly farmer to provide safe passage.
The suspense in Quester's Keep builds as players approach the endgame. The game pushes players to bank as much treasure as they can, never stopping or giving up. If a player can make it back to the Keep before the endgame timer runs out and stash away the final piece of treasure that will push them over the top, they could achieve a happy ending in this fantastical world.
